Will Wisdom Teeth Stitches Dissolve on Their Own?

If you’ve recently undergone wisdom tooth extraction, you might be wondering if your stitches are meant to dissolve on their own; and in some cases, they are! Here’s what you need to know about these stitches along with some helpful aftercare tips to ensure they’re able to do their job and help your mouth heal up!

What Are Wisdom Teeth Stitches?

Wisdom tooth extraction usually requires an incision and stitches, also called sutures. Stitches attach the cut gum tissue flap back into place to stabilize it, and they help your incision heal properly and protect the area from infection. The dentist or surgeon performing your wisdom teeth extraction will let you know what type of stitches, if any, they used.

Will Wisdom Teeth Stitches Dissolve on Their Own?

Dissolving stitches are special types of sutures that are usually used after wisdom teeth removal, and they disintegrate on their own usually within a few weeks after the procedure. The rate at which they dissolve completely usually depends on factors such as the extent of the tooth extraction procedure, the stitch size and type, and the stitch material used. In some instances, your oral surgeon may use stitches that don’t dissolve on their own. If this is the case, they will let you know when you should return to have the stitches removed, usually within 7 to 10 days after surgery.

Tips for Caring for Your Stitches

After wisdom tooth removal, you’ll receive aftercare instructions from your oral surgeon. The instructions will tell you how to care for your stitches and the blood clots that form over the extraction holes. These blood clots are beneficial because they help you avoid dry sockets, which are painful complications that can occur post-surgery.

Since every situation is different, it’s important to follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. That said, some tips to help you care for your stitches include:

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water and salt to reduce swelling and promote healing. You can also use an antiseptic mouth rinse once you’re past the 24-hour mark.
  • Stick to a soft-food diet at first, slowly introducing regular foods back into your diet as you’re able. It’s vital that you don’t disrupt your blood clots whenever you eat or drink!
  • Don’t brush or floss near the extraction sites for 3 – 7 days (or as long as your dentist recommends).

Knowing why wisdom teeth stitches can sometimes dissolve will only make you feel more at ease about your recovery process; just be sure to protect your extraction sites as they heal up!
