What Is Causing My Gum Pain?

July 20, 2018

Gum pain is a sign that something serious may be going on inside your mouth. Since a lot of gum issues don’t cause pain right when the problems begin, the pain is an indication that something has been brewing over time. The possible reasons for gum pain can range from very minor to very serious. If you are feeling pain in your gums, it is important to schedule an appointment with your dentist to diagnose the cause of the pain.

Some reasons for pain the gums are as follows:

Gum disease

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is an infection in the tissue that holds your teeth in place. This is one of the issues that tends to be found in later stages since there does not tend to be pain until the gum disease has advanced. Some of the first warning signs of gum disease are bleeding gums (often during brushing), swelling in the gums, and gum redness. Gum disease can be controlled or prevented with a proper brushing and flossing routine which can keep the harmful bacteria at bay. If gum disease is left untreated, the common result is pain in the gums, receding gums and even the loss of teeth.

Canker sores

Canker sores can cause gum pain but are typically less serious of a condition. Canker sores can appear on the lips, inside the mouth and on the gums directly. They are small, shallow ulcers that appear in the mouth and can sometimes have a white coating. The cause of canker sores is unknown, but are often related to stress or mechanical injury to the tissues. They do tend to go away on their own within a week or two. If they do not resolve in 2 weeks, it is important for you to see a dentist or oral surgeon for evaluation.

Tobacco

Another possible cause of gum pain could be from the use of tobacco. If you smoke or use chewing tobacco, dip, or snuff, you’re more likely to have gum disease. Both cigarettes and chewing tobacco are detrimental to your dental health. Tobacco use can lead to progressive periodontal (gum) disease which can destroy the gums and bone supporting your teeth. Additionally, all forms of tobacco use increases your risk of developing oral cancer.
