What are Dental Implants?

May 16, 2018

Dental implants are simply used to replace teeth. The implants are titanium posts that are surgically positioned into the jawbone under the gums. Once the implants integrate into the bone, the implants act as an anchor to fixate teeth or crowns. The crowns/teeth fixated to implants are made typically from porcelain or ceramic material custom made to mimic the color and shape of your natural teeth. These implants are as close to to natural teeth and function nearly the same, allowing you to speak clearly and eat nearly any food you like without worry.

If you are missing teeth, this is not only embarrassing but can make every day tasks like smiling, laughing, talking and eating difficult and frustrating. The surgeons at South Florida Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery can improve your self-confidence by restoring your smile. They will walk you through the process with care and compassion and make sure that your dental implants are aesthetically pleasing, functional and affordable.

What is the process like if I decide to get implants?

Two visits are required for dental implants.

During the first session, the dental implant (anchor) will be surgically placed into your jawbone. This anchor serves as a substitute for your tooth’s roots and is left in place for three to four months to integrate with your bone. However, advances in implant dentistry often allow our surgeons to place a tooth or crown on the implant the same day. Evaluation by one of our oral surgeons will help you determine which option is correct for you.

At your second appointment, called the uncovering, your surgeon will check the implant to ensure proper healing. Then you will released to return to your general dentist to have the final crown/tooth fabricated to fit the implant.

Are dental implants right for me?

In order to be eligible for dental implants, you need to have healthy gums and adequate bone to support the implant. You must also commit to keeping these structures healthy. Our surgeons will check your teeth, mouth, and gums, and may perform X-rays to ensure your bone structure is primed to support a tooth implant. We may also need to see the results of your most recent dental exam, in which case we will ask you to sign a release form allowing us to obtain your records. Meticulous oral hygiene and regular dental visits are critical to the long-term success of dental implants.
