Wisdom tooth extraction is something that almost all of us must go through at some point in our lives—and following the procedure, it’s super important to ensure that you’re able to get some sleep and acquire the rest your body needs. Here are some useful tips from your dentist to ensure that you’re still able to catch some Z’s following your procedure!

1. Sleep in a Correct Position

You should try to sleep with your head elevated for the first 24 hours following your procedure; ideally, it needs to be at a higher elevation than your heart. This ultimately reduces the amount of swelling that occurs and promotes clotting on the incision site, which is crucial for the healing process. This is easy to do if you stack an extra pillow or two underneath your head, or you can choose to sleep in a reclining chair.

2. Apply a Cold Compress as Needed

Studies and common knowledge alike show that using an ice pack on your face after wisdom teeth extractions will help to reduce both pain and swelling. Wrap the ice pack in a cloth and place it on your jaw for 20 minutes. You can use a bag of frozen vegetables if you don’t have a proper cold compress. You should consider doing this before bedtime so you’re reducing your comfort before going to bed.

3. Remove Your Gauze

After wisdom tooth extractions, gauze pads are placed on the incision sites to reduce bleeding and assist with the healing process by letting blood clots form. You need to remove the gauze a few hours after the surgery and before you go to bed to prevent choking accidents during the night.

4. Take Your Medications as Instructed

You’ll be given medication to manage your discomfort after your procedure, so be sure to take it as directed. Generally, it’s best to take it right before going to bed, as this will assist with any lingering soreness that might cause you problems while you’re trying to sleep.

It’s also worth noting that you should take great care of your body following any type of procedure—especially wisdom teeth extractions. Drink plenty of water, get plenty of rest, stick to your dietary guidelines and other post-op instructions, and do what you can to reduce the likelihood of experiencing complications.
