4 Must-Know Tips for Recovering from Wisdom Tooth Extraction

The wisdom teeth, also known as the third molars, are found at the very back of the mouth – and believe it or not, most patients actually don’t have enough room to properly house these teeth! This is why wisdom tooth extraction is one of the most common oral surgeries performed; however, if you’re slated for this procedure, you may still have concerns about navigating the process and ensuring a smooth recovery. Although you can’t technically “speed up” the healing process, there is quite a lot you can do to keep things moving without setbacks. Here are four tips to keep in mind.

1. Get Plenty of Rest

As with any type of surgery, minor or major, your body needs rest afterward. Wisdom tooth extraction is no exception; rest as directed in the days following your procedure. Not following this simple instruction can greatly slow down your body’s healing process and also even cause complications. Most wisdom tooth extraction patients need at least two to four full days of rest to begin feeling normal again. While resting, try to keep your head elevated to avoid swelling.

2. Protect the Blood Clots

The blood clots that form over your surgical sites have a very important purpose; they directly assist with the healing process, protecting the now-empty sockets from bacteria and debris. If you accidentally dislodge these clots, or if they don’t form, you could end up with a painful condition known as dry socket. One surefire way of preventing dry socket is by not using a drinking straw during your recovery. Likewise, avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy foods, and of course, do not touch or manipulate the blood clots with your tongue or fingers.

3. Stay Adequately Hydrated

Water is by far the best beverage for your oral health and overall wellness, so you should be sure that during your recovery, you’re drinking plenty of it. Water helps your mouth to produce more saliva, which is your body’s top defense against cavity-causing bacteria or other harmful germs that can harm your extraction sites. Even if you’re still feeling out of it, be sure that you’re at least sipping water throughout the way.

4. Watch for Signs of Complication

Your dentist will give you a list of instructions and guidelines to follow after your procedure, and you should follow these closely to the best of your ability; however, it also falls on you to keep an eye on things as they heal up. While swelling and some light bleeding are normal, your discomfort should drastically improve after a couple of days have passed. If things persist, or you’re noticing other concerning symptoms such as a fever, odd-colored discharge, or severe, unrelenting pain, don’t hesitate to let your dentist know so they can assist you!
